the mnemonic symbolism of women's textiles

Sewing Myth
by Toni Truesdale

Women’s hands have worked traditional images
Into fibers and skins throughout time.
Nothing is more personal than  labor of textiles.
Woven, embroidered, appliquéd, batiked,
Painted. pieced and quilted;
They are the stories of
Our grandmothers and great grandmothers.
Moments of life’s passages are marked
By  the beautiful of each work of art ;
Birth, puberty, marriage and death.
Textiles are the products of our female family.
We treasure them for generations.
The need to preserve traditional symbology in fibers is
Universal to virtually all earth’s cultures.
The love, thoughts, songs,
As well as, the prayers of these women
Remain in every stitch, stroke, warp and weave...
